GOING BACK TO NEW YORK CITY & IN THE PINES - BANANAFISH
(Hookah Records 7" 45)
To celebrate their 2016 summer tour and appearance at the Shagrat Records Isle of White Festival, our mate Ross Hannan has released a fine 'Smash Hit Single' collaboration by Barry Melton (Country Joe & the Fish) and Banana (Youngbloods).
Largely acoustic and done at Owl Mountain Studio where the 'Get Together' double 10" was recorded, this is a must have item (just 200 pressed folks) - the pair who have been collaborating regularly over recent years are in fine fettle on their version of Michael Barclay's 'Going Back to New York City' and the traditional 'In the Pines'.
Also features another gem of a sleeve by John Hurford. You can buy this for £7 (UK), £8 (Europe) and £9 (rest of world) by sending the money to Ross at Paypal at the address below:
'Rural Bliss' is a new book by our friend and artistic collaborator John Hurford. A beautiful collection of black and white photographs taken between 1981 and 1986 by John depicting life on the farm and countryside in Devon with John and Jane Hurford, family and friends - really nice stuff and a great early Xmas present. is a great bass player who has recently toured the UK with Little Feat
's Paul Barrere
and Fred Tackett
Back in the late 60s Steve Turner
was a legend, one of the most revered bass players in my old stamping round of Blackpool. Nowadays he's a highly revered guitarist with an astonishing CV to his name..
is a veteran drummer - he played in two of my fave bands, Quiver
(and lest we forget with Syd Barrett
and Dave Gilmour
). More recently he played in the great Cornwall band, the Bucket Boys
with fellow Quiver member Tim Renwick
, singer Rick Worthy and the aforementioned Mr Turner!
It should be a great night.

NEW BOOK FROM JOHN HURFORD
'Later Graphic Work' by John Hurford (Wixon Editions, Hardback)
Johnny has produced a stunning new book which basically compiles a lot of stuff he has been doing over the past five years including designs for Shagrat and Judy Dyble (some little seen or never seen before) - stunning full colour reproductions of sleeves, flyers and other material all carefully and sometimes amusingly annotated by John.
This is the perfect Christmas present - but hurry only 200 copies printed.

The Book Launch is on 28th November 2015 at Broomhill Popup Gallery, Barnstaple:

GET TOGETHER: BANANA RECALLS YOUNGBLOODS CLASSICS
Double 10” Album (ENT 019/Hookah XX 002)
It was 50 years ago today! Well give or take a few days!
October 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the formation of one of our favourite groups, the Youngbloods when Jesse Colin Young, Jerry Corbitt, Banana and Joe Bauer got together to form one of the great bands of the folk rock and psychedelic eras. Their story has been chronicled many times and though the band split up in September 1973 (with a short-lived reunion in the 80s), their spirit lives on.
Sadly Jerry and Joe are no longer with us, but last year Banana undertook a fascinating project, Get Together in which he re-visited some of the many songs that the Youngbloods had in their repertoire.
Banana is releasing the set in the US as a digi-pak CD but here in Europe Shagrat in cahoots with Ross Hannan’s Hookah label, are releasing it as a double 10” set with a tri-partite gatefold sleeve. And the good news is that we are offering not only the full length version of ‘Supersonic Transport’ in all its six-minute plus glory (edited for the CD) but also an exclusive additional cut of Banana performing Fred Neil’s ‘Other Side of This Life’.

By now most of you will know that we lost a truly original human being, friend and one of the greatest electric guitars players of his generation Richard Treece at the end of May.
His close friend and former Help Yourself band mate Malcolm Morley is organising a musical tribute on 13th September - please see flyer here.

ensuring this will probably be the rarest release we ever do!!

GIG News - Bridget St John + Michael Chapman - May 31st 2015
The wonderful Bridget St John is touring later this month and she's added an additional show:
Sun 31st May - 2pm matinee £13.50 in advance
Green Note, 106 Parkway, London, NW1 7AN
Bridget St John + Michael Chapman
Bridget St John recorded three albums on John Peel’s Dandelion label from 1969-72, before moving to NY. Her impressive voice is deep and resonant. It’s a voice made for melancholy, and you can’t argue with her musical ability, whether it is singing Dylan, a tribute to her friend John Martyn or her own work.
Michael Chapman, who was also championed by Peel, is a masterful guitar player, a great bluesy singer with a wonderful rasp to his voice, and also possessed of a quick dry wit. This is a special chance to catch two world class artists on tour together!
An evening with Malcolm Morley
Saturday 2nd May 8-11pm
Upstairs at the Betsy Trotwood
56 Farringdon Road, London EC1R 3BL
Malcolm will be playing selections from the recent 'Raw' EP as part of his set

November 2014 MALCOLM MORLEY "RAW" – (ENT018 10”)
(formerly of Help Yourself
and Bees Make Honey
) has recorded some new solo songs we are overjoyed to be releasing as a 10” EP.
It’s entitled ‘Raw
’ because that’s exactly what it is – undiluted Malcolm Morley – just his voice and guitar, occasionally augmented by sparse accompanying instrumentation on some tracks – done in the spirit of those old blues and folk recordings.
The EP ships first week of December 2014 and for those that buy this vinyl release, there will be a free digital download as part of the package.
This will NOT be available on CD.

MICK HAS LEFT THE BUILDING
We were devastated by the passing of Mick Farren
, who incidentally died the same week as another of our beloved artists Andy 'Chicken Legs' Weaver
As some of you might recall, Mick wrote the evocative liner to Chicken Legs Weaver's 'Wishbone Hands'
We miss Mick and Andy sorely - they were great guys and very original figures.
To commemorate Mick's ascendency to the Big Gig in the Sky, we asked John Hurford
to design a beautiful poster around Byron Coley's wonderful ode to the great man, 'Mick Has Left the Building
Only 100 of these were printed and most were given away to Mick's band mates, close friends and family but we have a few left which we are happy to sell to cover our costs including a handful signed by Mr Hurford.
Please write in HERE
for further details.

July 2013 MICK FARREN RIP 27th July 2013
It is with great sadness we have to report that singer, writer, counter culture icon and all round good guy Mick Farren passed away over the weekend. Mick was performing with the Deviants early on Saturday evening as part of the Atomic Sunshine show at the Borderline club in London when he collapsed after the band's third number, 'Cocaine and Gunpowder'- he suffered massive irreversible and progressive brain damage, and never regained consciousness. Even amidst tragedy, there was a certain poetic ring to his passing. At least if he had to go, he was doing what he loved best, performing up on stage with some of his oldest friends. Full obit to follow
May 2013 ** THE DEVIANTS return with a brand new single !
Yes folks we’re stoked to announce the imminent arrival of a brand new single by the legendary Deviants.

- Shagrat Records: ENT014 10" Vinyl EP
The first new recordings in over 30 years from this legendary psychedelic Cornish band
The Brainiacs can rock out like the Yardbirds and the Move but follow smoke trails laid down by figures as diverse as
Lee Perry, Funkadelic and seminal West Coast acts like Spirit and Skip Spence.
This beautiful 10" vinyl features Space Is The Place, dedicated to Sun Ra, plus Matelot Mick and Kabul, recreations of songs originally performed in the early ‘70s by the mysterious Half Human Band and until recently thought to be lost forever.
