Bridget St. John flies in for her first post-Pandemic live show in London since 2019's delightful matinee at the Betsey Trotwood.
The show at Cafe Oto on Sunday 15th October, is a double header with singer songwriter
Emma Tricca, who as anyone who saw her wonderful 'secret set' between
Starry Eyed & Laughing and the Hanging Stars at the Betsey last September, will attest, this is a must attend event..
Emma and Bridget have recently worked together in New York and promise a set each and then a short collaboration together on the night. Should be a real treat.

POSTER FOR A LEGENDARY GIG
We had John Hurford design a fab poster for the Rain Parade/Starry Eyed gig on 5th March but decided against using it as we knew the date would sell out by word of mouth and not through social media.
It was quite an afternoon!
We had 30 giclee prints produced of the poster designed for the event.
The prints are 700mm L x 500mm W with a 20mm (approx) white border on a heavy matt 230gsm paper, Epson ink.
The prints are signed and numbered by Johnny. Johnny took 5 .
Having given copies to the Rain Parade and Starry Eyed guys as a thank you for playing the show and taken one for myself, that leaves just 20.
The printing costs were high so these handsome devils are going at £50 a pop plus P&P.

I'm therefore thrilled to announce that High On The Pyg Track Records have just released a new vinyl-only solo album (limited pressing of 300) by their keyboard player Jens Unosson titled 'Be as good to others as they are not to you”.
It's a deep, sensitive and mysterious album, at times serene and 'spacious' and, at others, blisteringly psychedelic. The album exudes the 'spirit' of metaphysical SSWs like Tom Rapp of Pearls Before Swine who The Spacious Mind famously backed on his long awaited return to live performance at Terrastock in London '99, while the wonderful lysergically-soaked guitar-work of Arne Jonasson (a regular of co-conspirator of Jens in The Holy River Family Band, Cauldron, etc) has traces of Barry Melton and the late great Richard Treece.
There's cool cover art by John Hurford too, and a fold-out lyric insert with a stash of photos of Jens and 'blissful company' in their bucolic retreat.
Don't sleep on this one, it'll be gone before you know it!

It is a duo only show with original members Tony Poole and Iain Whitmore, no bass and drums.

Expect an afternoon of cosmic folk rock, Americana and psychedelic country pop.

We are putting on a gig !
Thanks to the pandemic it's been over two years since Bridget St. John & Sarah Smout wowed a capacity audience at the Betsey Trotwood in August 2019.
We're absolutely delighted to present a great double header on Saturday afternoon 23rd October again at the Betsey (see flyer above).
Bonnie Dobson needs no introduction. This Canadian born singer is now in her 80th year but still sings as beautifully as she did back in her heyday of the 1960s..
When we put on Lords of Thyme a few years ago, they were joined by Bonnie for a rousing, magical second set. Best known for her songs, 'I'm Your Woman', and 'Morning Dew' of course, No need to wax lyrical over how many amazing versions of this folk rock classic have been done over the years.
Bonnie has lived in the UK for many years and over the course of her illustrious career has recorded some fine albums. She'll be playing first on the ground floor of the Betsey accompanied by Joe Wooley from the Lords.
Joe will be having a busy afternoon because he is also part of the other act we're presenting, Large Plants, the new band led by ex-Wolf People singer-guitarist, Jack Sharp. Described as his post-apocalyptic downer-fuzz-rock side project, last summer Jack was suddenly without a band and faced with the enforced lockdown, set up in a friends’ old barn in Bedfordshire and created a tonne of scuzzy, loner, biker-rock.
The group already has two fine digital singles available, 'The Carrier' and 'The Death of Pliny' - you can hear more at https://largeplantsband.bandcamp.com/music
Expect them to lift the basement roof and watch out for their magnificent retread of Madonna's 'La Isla Bonita'

ECHOES: THE HAMPTON GREASE BAND, MY LIFE, MY MUSIC AND HOW I STOPPED HAVING PANIC ATTACKS
The amazing Atlanta-based guitar maestro has just announced his first major release since the two retro albums we put out on Shagrat in 2015 and 2017, LOST AT SEA and AT THE RAINBOW (copies still available)

For those as yet untouched by Glenn's astounding guitar playing, here are a few facts:
Glenn Phillips is a critically acclaimed guitarist and composer who’s released 20 albums over the past 50 years.
Rolling Stone: "If rock & roll guitarists were kamikaze pilots, Glenn Phillips would be in heaven right now."
As a founding member and songwriter of the Hampton Grease Band in the late '60s, he had encounters with John Lennon, Frank Zappa, Spider-Man co-creator and artist Steve Ditko, and played with countless bands of the era including The Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac, The Allman Brothers, and Jimi Hendrix (Phillips is a featured interviewee in the Hendrix documentary Electric Church).
His first solo album, 1975's Lost at Sea, was recorded at home and self-released. It predated and influenced the do-it-yourself movement that later overtook rock music and led to him being signed to Virgin Records by Richard Branson.
Phillips’ memoir relates not only his musical experiences, but also the circumstances that shaped him: his parent's alcoholism, his father's suicide, having a daughter on his 18th birthday that was given up for adoption, and his later experiences with panic attacks and how he stopped them. Phillips says, “The common thread to all of my music is that it’s all been part of an effort to understand a life that didn’t always make sense as it was happening." At its core, that journey is the story of his memoir.

Bridget St. John - 'Live at The Betsey Trotwood' Album Launch
at THE BETSEY TROTWOOD - Sunday August 18th 2019
We are thrilled to be putting out a 12" live LP by Bridget St. John.
Released in collaboration with US label Feeding Tube, the album (vinyl and download only) features the entire set of her now legendary live appearance at the Betsey Trotwood in February 2017. (More details of how to buy it will be posted here shortly)
Bridget will be playing three UK dates in August ahead of a full tour here in the autumn. She plays the Green Man Festival on 16th, the David Bowie Festival in Beckenham on Saturday afternoon 17th and to launch the LP, a special show for us at the Betsey Trotwood on Sunday afternoon 18th August - see flyer.
Wary of trying to repeat the classic show from February 17, the Sunday afternoon at the Trotwood promises to be a bit different as it also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the release of her debut 45 for Dandelion, 'To B Without A Hitch/Autumn Lullaby' which came out in the summer of 1969.
Bridget will be accompanied by amazing celloist Sarah Smout who some of you will have seen on the recent Michael Chapman tour and Tony Poole whose incomparable work on the audio for the live LP has added so much, will play a rare solo support slot.

In collaboration with Hookah Records, we are thrilled to present a limited edition 12” LP (500 copies only) of new material by Moby Grape mainstay Peter Lewis, Just Like Jack.
The album licensed from Austin’s Steady Boy Records, features 10 cuts recorded over the past few years by Rocky Erickson and the Explosives drummer, Freddie Krc. Freddie will be releasing the CD version (with one different cut to the vinyl release) on Steady Boy in the US at the same time.
This new Peter Lewis set will appear very soon after a very auspicious date – the 50th anniversary of that awesome debut Moby Grape album, though that is where comparisons end.
Says Peter: ‘I really think this is the first time I have been able to put down my true thoughts. So much of the song writing adventure for me has been about image. Moby Grape was a character driven experience in which the band members tended to type cast each other. Some great music came out of it for sure. But the soul wants to change and I believe that's what this record is about. At least, when I listen to it, that's how I feel about this collection of songs’.

THE HOODLE
We're doing a show in the West Country with our mate Chill Hill, featuring the Hoodle a trio comprising Willie Wilson, Steve Turner and Emma Spires on Friday 15th April - see flyer for more details.
Emma Spires is a great bass player who has recently toured the UK with Little Feat's Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett.
Back in the late 60s Steve Turner was a legend, one of the most revered bass players in my old stamping round of Blackpool. Nowadays he's a highly revered guitarist with an astonishing CV to his name..
Willie Wilson is a veteran drummer - he played in two of my fave bands, Quiver and Cochise (and lest we forget with Syd Barrett and Dave Gilmour). More recently he played in the great Cornwall band, the Bucket Boys with fellow Quiver member Tim Renwick, singer Rick Worthy and the aforementioned Mr Turner!
It should be a great night.

Guests on the album include Jesse Colin Young, David Grisman, Peter Stampfel, Ry Cooder, Michael Hurley (who also provided illustrations for the 12 page booklet that accompanies the release), Dan Hicks, Maria Muldaur and David Nelson.
Our hosts for the afternoon are Le QuecumBar in Battersea who will staff the bar but no food will be available. We recommend a visit at other times to take a dip in to their menu and to listen to Django Reinhardt inspired Gypsy Jazz. http://quecumbar.co.uk/

It was 50 years ago today! Well give or take a few days!
October 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the formation of one of our favourite groups, the Youngbloods when Jesse Colin Young, Jerry Corbitt, Banana and Joe Bauer got together to form one of the great bands of the folk rock and psychedelic eras. Their story has been chronicled many times and though the band split up in September 1973 (with a short-lived reunion in the 80s), their spirit lives on.
Sadly Jerry and Joe are no longer with us, but last year Banana undertook a fascinating project, Get Together in which he re-visited some of the many songs that the Youngbloods had in their repertoire.
Banana is releasing the set in the US as a digi-pak CD but here in Europe Shagrat in cahoots with Ross Hannan’s Hookah label, are releasing it as a double 10” set with a tri-partite gatefold sleeve. And the good news is that we are offering not only the full length version of ‘Supersonic Transport’ in all its six-minute plus glory (edited for the CD) but also an exclusive additional cut of Banana performing Fred Neil’s ‘Other Side of This Life’.

Malcolm will be playing selections from the recent 'Raw' EP as part of his set .....some folk and blues....one or two Morley songs from the past....the odd tall story.....a first airing for the poem Rubber Duck...........an appearance by the wonderful Ms. Kakie Taylor-Black.....conversation, conviviality and a drink or two from the Trotwood bar for those who like to imbibe the hard stuff.

Malcolm Morley (formerly of Help Yourself, Man and Bees Make Honey) has recorded some new solo songs we are overjoyed to be releasing as a 10” EP.
It’s entitled ‘Raw’ because that’s exactly what it is – undiluted Malcolm Morley – just his voice and guitar, occasionally augmented by sparse accompanying instrumentation on some tracks – done in the spirit of those old blues and folk recordings.
The EP ships first week of December 2014 and for those that buy this vinyl release, there will be a free digital download as part of the package.

MICK HAS LEFT THE BUILDINGWe were devastated by the passing of Mick Farren, who incidentally died the same week as another of our beloved artists Andy 'Chicken Legs' Weaver last July.
As some of you might recall, Mick wrote the evocative liner to Chicken Legs Weaver's 'Wishbone Hands' live LP.
We miss Mick and Andy sorely - they were great guys and very original figures.
To commemorate Mick's ascendency to the Big Gig in the Sky, we asked John Hurford to design a beautiful poster around Byron Coley's wonderful ode to the great man, 'Mick Has Left the Building'.
Only 100 of these were printed and most were given away to Mick's band mates, close friends and family but we have a few left which we are happy to sell to cover our costs including a handful signed by Mr Hurford.

Issued as a limited edition of just 300 copies, and housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve, designed by John Hurford, with extensive sleeve notes by Phil himself and some evocative archive photos, this 10” release features seven largely acoustic original Greenberg numbers together with a version of ‘Catalina Sunset’ his friend Jack O’Hara from Eggs Over Easy wrote during his stay in London in 1971 plus a live version of the folk classic ‘Golden Apples of the Sun’ recorded in 1966 live off the PA at the Jabberwock.

July 2013 MICK FARREN RIP 27th July 2013
It is with great sadness we have to report that singer, writer, counter culture icon and all round good guy Mick Farren passed away over the weekend. Mick was performing with the Deviants early on Saturday evening as part of the Atomic Sunshine show at the Borderline club in London when he collapsed after the band's third number, 'Cocaine and Gunpowder'- he suffered massive irreversible and progressive brain damage, and never regained consciousness. Even amidst tragedy, there was a certain poetic ring to his passing. At least if he had to go, he was doing what he loved best, performing up on stage with some of his oldest friends.
